World record holding vegan athlete at Cork Vegfest

Cork Becomes Ireland’s Vegan Capital, May 13th, 2017

We are delighted to welcome Fiona Oakes – an elite marathon runner, the fastest woman in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents and the North Pole in both cumulative and elapsed time. She has made a name for herself as an endurance runner apart from the rest. She has competed internationally in more than 50 marathons and set 4 marathon course records around the globe, including The Antarctic Ice Marathon. In 2015 Fiona ran 6 marathons in 6 days on 6 continents.

Fiona’s achievements are made even more astounding due to the fact she was told at age 14 that she would never walk properly, let alone ever run, after undergoing radical knee surgery to remove a massive tumor and her entire right kneecap. Fiona operates almost single handedly, an animal sanctuary, caring for nearly 400 formerly abused and neglected animals, all while training more than 100 miles a week in running.

Fiona is the recipient of numerous awards (ie IFAW Animal Advocacy Award in 2012). She has also given many radio and television interviews being featured on the BBC news. Fiona will be the subject of a new feature documentary Running For Good due for release in 2018 by Keegan Kuhn, the maker of Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret.
